Hobbes (the Tiger) - "I read that girls are made of 'Sugar and Spice & everything nice..
....whereas boys are made of 'snips & snails and puppy dogs' tails"
Calvin (the Kid) - "Hmmph...So what are Tigers made of ?"
Hobbes - "Dragonflies & katy kids ..but mostly 'chewed up little kids!' "
Calvin (with a look that could hardly kill a fly) - 'That's clever!"
Ah! how I wish life was as simple and I had a pet tiger too that could talk!!!

Mumbai-Pune-Mumbai
I know that thousands of people do this daily and even more do it on Weekends. But everytime I make that trip between Mumbai-Pune on weekends, I cannot help but appreciate how much I love this stretch of travel and with all the things it helps me with.
As a kid,I always thought of Pune as that junction that used to arrive after the journey through the Lonavla-Khandala ghaats;the junction that used to arrive after the train went over the bridge across the Mula-Mutha river ( I now know that bridge as the 'Sangam' Bridge); the junction that I only used to look out to from behind the glass panes of the Air conditioned confines of the train compartment. I don't know why, but I always used to wonder what was beyond that railway station!!
For starters, there's the usual 2 modes of travel that can help you make this journey; road and rail (I'm totally discounting that 15 min flight from Mumbai which I have done too)
Take the train from Mumbai and you are sure to have that unique journey experience that this route offers. Although, there are close to 8 dedicated trains that ply between the 2 cities, the 'Deccan Queen' rules the roost even today. Once upon a time, it was a status symbol to take this train. Now though, it's just another train...although probably it would help to know that this one is amongst the quickest and would get you to your destination in flat 3 hrs. Personally, I view this journey as one that can be roughly divided into 4 parts. The first one that gets you out of Mumbai until you reach Kalyan on the outskirts is just a dull drab. The scenery ( if i
can call it that) is just a mixture of the usual Mumbai suburban rush, rubbish, apartments that seem to be kissing each other.. ( Hope you get the picture!) The next one from thereon, until you reach Karjat is a bit of a mixture, starting with views of the lower middle class localities hugging the Outskirts of Mumbai and ending with wide open spaces as you reach closer to karjat. (Of course, you also cross through Neral that houses the toy-trains that take you up to Matheran). Karjat is also where you 'have' to have that famous 'vada-pav' while the railways take their time to add those 2 additional engines onto the train that helps it make the climb that awaits across the next stretch. So, Karjat station for me is symbolic of that stopover you make in life, where you relax, refill your thoughts from time to time! (Hope this doesn't sound too dramatic). Also, most trains on this route have a Pantry car (Surprised? cause it's all done in 3 hrs) where you can savour cutlets, oily omelette's etc with some bread along with cups of 'tea-bag' chai and 'milk powder' coffee.Moving on, the next stretch of the journey is absolutely a treat. The train chugs along at an idyllic pace as it crosses through the renowned Khandala-Lonavla Ghats. Scenic views of the valley below are on offer. This stretch turns even more pristine during the monsoons with little gushing waterfalls forming up at regular intervals. It is absolutely a treat to push your head a bit and catch the ends of the train when it goes round the curve. (I do that even today!). Once you get across this section filled with tunnels (Large and small ones alike), you reach Lonavla, after which you get a feel of the semi-rural areas before you finally reach Pune.
The other option of course is taking the road. Here, though, you have 2 options. One of them is the very well built expressway (This, for many of us, was a marvel even until a few years ago).Although, it is still a pain to get through the city before you get to Wakad where you actually hit the Express lane, the ride after this is very much seamless. Right until the point when you reach Panvel on the outskirts of Mumbai. The road is indeed very well constructed. There are huge signboards all along the route, advising drivers on how to ride the expressway. There are also huge advertising boards, marketing everything from real-estate to Banking services. There're also food jaunts along the exits and although there's variety of food on offer, it's a bit of a rip-off. Of course, the expressway does not offer you the romance that the old Mumbai-Pune highway has in store. Although this road too is now very well maintained, it wasn't an easy ride when there was no expressway. I remember riding the old highway as a kid to Lonavala during the monsoons. Vehicles literally had to grind their way up the gradients, snaking along the curves.
I personally prefer taking the train since it's faster (and more economical too :D). More importantly, I enjoy this ride and have been a regular at it now every time I travel back home to Mumbai on weekends. And I have some good old Bollywood music for company. Rhythm and Rail. The perfect combination!

Random
- Quick...Now say this with all the style and attitude you got!
"Hello India.....Do you like Akon?
The crowd: yeah (loud)
Do you like the Black Eyed Peas?
Crowd: Yeah (again)
Do you know who's the Goadfather of them all?
Crowd: (muffled sounds)
Here comes WYCLEF JEAN!
Crowd: (loud cheering)"
Was at the Hard Rock cafe a couple of Weekends ago (didn't even know that one existed in Pune until then) for the VH1 initiative performance by Wyclef Jean. Had a great time. Although it was a very short performance, it packed a punch. Thoroughly entertainng. Started with his "Sweetest girl" track from the Latest album Carnival II - Memoirs of an immigrant. It was a treat for the crowd to go along with the chorus shouting "dollar dollar bill y'all....dollar dollar bill y'all". The girls got a piece of Wyclef when they joined him during his rendition of "hips don't lie". And of course there was also "gone till November" and a surprise jig with Aadesh Srivastava (Bollywod...huh?). Although it was a bit dissapointing that "maria Maria" wasn't on the charts that evening.
- Global recession, rising inflation, rising oil prices, the impending food grain shortage are all over the place nowadays. But this piece of news beats everything else hands down. Don't really know what to make out of it.
- Mumbai is cooler than most other place in Maharashtra currently. The rest of the state has been reeling under a heatwave. Pune was sizzling hot last week at a shade above 40.

Happy New Year !
The Last Day of the year is Finally Here. And I'm Sitting happy at The Prospect of Getting the Next three days off...A rarity considering the fact that I have been Working On New Year's Eve and On New Year's day for the past three years. In fact Last year I was down With Fever and ended up sleeping at home on New Year's day.
This Year has been fairly good for me In most aspects. There have been changes Galore on the Personal front as well as at work. I have made New Friends In Bangalore. And I'm getting along well with most of them, which is not quite normal since I'm very choosy about Socialisng and stuff. Maybe the fact that all of us are away from home is a common factor that makes us get along well. We don't have a plan yet for New year's eve, but I'm sure that whatever comes up last minute will be worth it....at least I'm hoping for it to turn out well.
Also, Hopefully, I will be making a trip back home This month. Much needed and well deserved;)
So, Wish you all a Very Happy New Year...and Hope that we achieve all that we've been aiming for! Cheers!

Weekend Thoughts
So, the weekend didn't turn out bad after all. A couple of my colleagues come down to Banagalore for a training session and they were insisting that I show them around Bangalore. Considering the fact that I myself haven't been around the city much, I think I did a good job showing them around MG road, Vidhan Soudha, High court and Cubbon Park. I myself haven't been to most of these places in years.
Saw Chameli late night Saturday on TV. Read a bit. Sunday was spent in cleaning the house and rearranging the space that I call My Kitchen;) Shopped a bit for stuff too. The evening was spent at NASA on MG road.
I have been reading Shantaram since august now. I wonder why it's taking me so long to finish a book that's so good. Besides it's literary brilliance, it's written from the heart. The thoughts expressed are so real. There's so much of truth in it....kinda difficult to remember it all. Here's a small piece at the end of part 2; How Sad and true!
" Sometimes we love with nothing more than hope. Sometimes we cry with everything except tears. In the end, that's all there is: love and it's duty, sorrow and it's truth. In the end, that's all we have - to hold on tight until the dawn"
Ah! The sweet pain of love!

T.G.I. Friday
Yeah! It's been that kind of a week. Work has been Uninspiring and I have been getting into all kindsa arguments with my client. Nothing Serious...But puts you off nonetheless.
This Week, one more colleague of mine was assigned to this project and he arrived in Bangalore. He will be staying with us. And he bought an Original Swades DVD with him :) I was pleasantly Suprised. I still remember last year around this same time, when I saw the Movie at Fame Adlabs on a Lazy Sunday. There was nothing pretentious about this movie and maybe that's why I liked it a lot. I mean how many Hindi movies do you get in a year that have some message or Ideals? (It's usually either a cheating husband or Outright nonsense Action stuff). And although, Rehman doesn't create magic with Swades' music, still, hat's off to him. He manages to create the North Indian Village feel to it. That's some versatility. Although, he never needs a Super hit to maintain his credibility, It's time he came up with something special. I don't think he's had any Hindi hits after Lagaan and Saathiya, has he?
Music is keeping me good company in Bangalore. Bless the people who created Ipods and players alike. Recently I have been listening to Remixes from The BED LOUNGE. Before you form any kind of opininons, let me say that this album makes a lot of sense...unlike the DJ Doll Remixes;) I love 'Kya Khoob Lagti..", "Teri chaaht" and 'Meri nazar". try them.
Hope to chill out this weekend. And a bit of reading too. Let's see how it turns out.

It's been a While now.
A lot of water has passed through Mumbai (and Bangalore for that matter) since my last post. Since then, I have come back to India, Moved back to Bangalore, Found a place to share with two other project members, my project transition has happened to India and I am working from Bangalore now.
It sure has been one hell of a hectic last 2 months or so. I have had a lot of fun going places and learning new things at work. There hasn't been a single moment that I can remember of, when I have had any idle time. Or even time to think about Personal stuff. But the Onset of the Festive season has got me back to that mode now. This time of the year is usually my favourite. It's when You get to enjoy the festivities, the weather gets better and you know that the Onset of another New year is round the corner.
However, Spending a Diwali away from Family and Friends does make you feel a bit lonely. The only plus has been the weather in Bangalore; minus the rain of course. Thankfully, the rains stayed away on Diwali day, allowing the kids in the bylane that I live in to enjoy the pyrotechnic displays. It feels a bit strange to be living in a place that's not a seven storeyed building with more similar buildings around you. The narrow Bylanes that lead you off the main road take you inwards to a row of two storeyed houses. A very common sight is a row of clothesline seen hanging on the rooftop of all these houses. The neighbourhood is full of smalltime snack places treating you to the most delectable south Indian Snacks and tiny cups of refreshing coffee;). The Bangalore traffic is however, driving me mad. Disorganised is the only thing that comes to my mind.
It' s been only a month since I've come back and already I'm having that urge to take a weekend flight back home to Mumbai. But the thought that spending only a day with family or Friends will leave me craving for more keeps me away from doing that:)

I-Day Rocked!
Well..In fact the whole weekend was a great one. Firstly, having 3 days off in a new city away from friends and family is not a very pleasing thing. Right now, I'm living very comfortably in a guest house with everything from food to Laundry being taken care of. But i know for sure that once I have to move out to a rented place, I will need all of the weekend to attend to Domestic chores myself.
Saturday morning was spent in lazing around...late breakfast and TV. Me and my roommate then left for a trip to the heart of Bangalore, it's main commercial street, M.G.Road. Although the malls, coffee place, restaurants and Pubs are much bigger and better than Mumbai, the pollution was twice as much too. We spent most of the afternoon and late evening in moving around Richmond road, Residencey road, Brigade road and M.G.road.
Sunday and Monday were a treat. I took the early morning train to Mysore. The weather was awesome. And the journey...even better..i did not mind the weekend crowd for once. Mysore was much cooler than I expected. Cold in fact. And the part of town that my Uncle lives in was superb ( I think I will run out of most superlatives I know at the end of this post). The entire city is spread out in elevated parts. Every part offers a great view of the others. The houses are all really well planned and Superbly built. Monday morning was spent in driving around the Outskirts of Mysore...especially the Hebbal area. This area houses most of the IT giants like Infy, L&T, Wipro etc. I wonder, why would youngsters want to leave a job after working in such a peaceful and beautiful place? I think it's because of the lack of things that we are so used to...Swish pubs, coffee places, Entertainment complexes etc. The Infy complex was a township in itself...everything beautifully organised within the boundaries.
I'm not really in a mood to get back to any work right now after a lovely weekend. But wil have to. Work is good too right now....So I won't mind it as much as I usually do.

Saturday Night and other thoughts
Had a real good time this Saturday. Saw Million Dollar Baby, Hung out at Planet M, walked a bit around CST and colaba and Finally washed it all down At Cafe Mondegar. Typical Evening I might say. The movie was good. A lot has already been said and heard about it already...So I shall refrain from doing that. I loved the entire concept of narrations used in such a movie...The bits done by Clint Eastwood and by Morgan Freeman. Also evident in the last scene was this concept of Symbolism that sumier keeps talking about..I hope I got it right here...In the last scene when Clint Eastwood pulls off the respirator tube, only the left side of Morgan freeman's face was visible in the background..The side in which he turned blind years ago during a fight....So he actually Turned a Blind Eye to the Mercy killing of Maggie....Anyway...that's how I perceive it atleast :) The story moved at an easy pace, but was gripping nonetheless. Hence, I was justified in being a bit irritated when My bud sitting next to me made his restlessness obvious when he kept Fanning himself with a CD cover all along;) It reminded me of the time we all saw LOTR-The fellowship of the ring....Rohan constantly kept asking us questions all along and we actually had to cater to him by offering him very detailed and narrative explanations:). Speaking of reminders, everytime i see a movie these days, I'm reminded of the good old days when it used to more than 10-12 of us going for a movie together. That may never happen again. I guess that's what Sumier means when he keeps saying that people have moved away....Partly at least. I've been having similar thoughts all along last week when tentative plans to go to GOA were being chalked up. We're kinda going to have to make do with just the four of us when the last time around i can recollect at least 14 of us being there. Well, I'm not asking for all the14..But at least I could have 3-4 more of my best buds back here. I guess this is how things will be for all further outings...Maybe it could be worse...Maybe no outings or get-togethers at all. I hope that does not happen.

Psychobabble!
The better part of the festive season is over babies! And it's back to work.....Endless drudgery and seemingly unendless moments of frustration. Although I must say that this part of the year gets me into an unusual high. Although the festive lights will have to be pulled down soon (I just love these lights even though I am well aware that there's enough streetlights lining the mumbai roads), the onset of winter just gets me in to that nippy mood.
It means at least three months of relief from the dusty heat, the hope that the upcoming new year brings, new resolutions to be made and most importantly putting back the disappointment of not having lived up to my previous year's resolutions. Of course, there's also the anticipatory moments leading up to my birthday......Hoping that my best pals won't forget to wish me (thank you gang!).
That's it then.... No rants, no raves...Nothing much actually

Blink 182
I was left wondering today if the purpose of creating this weblog ( after I very conveniently got rid of my previous one) is fading away into oblivion. In fact right now, I'm not even sure why I started on this one in the first place. And why in hell's name did I call it ALL THE SMALL THINGS? I'm sure it does not have anything to do with the similarly titled song by an American teenage punk band. Why then, Why?
So....
"All the, small things
True care, truth brings"
So....
"All the, small things
True care, truth brings"

A lot of matter...and none of it matters!
The rains have come and gone. Even the moths have undergone their cycle of metamorphsis (I know for sure that all of them didn't make it...the horrible looking gecko outside my window sill is proof of that). However i'm still left wondering whether i will ever metamorphosise into something from the lazy sloth i have turned into.
Last week I finished reading The Da Vinci code. I would seriously suggest that all ye mere mortals who still haven't laid their hands and eyes on it do so at once. (Although i wonder why you shoould be taking my word for it The book has everything; something for everyone....art, history, scientists, historians, thrill, crime busters etcetra etcetra. Good fun!
P.S: what I have above is not really much matter, but I hope you understand that this was all i could pull of given my state of near absolute laziness.
